  • tiki mugs

Throw the ultimate luau for your friends with these party planning tips.

    Invitations:
Set the tone with festive luau invitations. Customize them with Shutterfly Luau Party Invitations or Coconut Luau Summer Invitations. If you want to send something really unique, opt for Message in a Bottle Tropical Invitations. Simply fill out the paper, put in the extras provided in the invitation kit (like sand and a mini umbrella) and pop the invitations in the mail.

Decorations: Now comes the fun part! The tropical decor for your luau party can be anything from simple to over the top. Start off by gathering items that have an island-like feel. If you want to just stick to the basics, you can pick up a Luau Tropical Decorations Party Kit.

If you want to really set the mood, start by assembling your own Tiki Entrance for guests to walk through. As they pass the entrance, place a Frosted Blossom Lei over their head as a welcome. Hang a Colored Fish Net up and decorate with Assorted Plastic Tropical Fish. Add some Inflatable Palm Trees around the party space and hang a few Tropical Bird Tissue Decorations.

  • pacifier

Welcome baby with a fun theme shower. Credit: Corbis

Noah's Ark is a perfect theme for the nursery -- and for the baby shower, too!

    Invitations
: Send them at least a month before the event, let everyone know about the baby shower well in advance. If you want to send invitations by mail, choose Noah's Ark Baby Shower Invitations or go with simple invitations with animals on them. If you would prefer to gather all the RSVPs online, send out an email invitation.

When you are filling out the invitation, make sure to include the date, time, place, host(s), and how people should RSVP. If you are sending them by mail, provide two ways for guests to RSVP, such as a phone number and an email address, or multiple phone numbers for showers with multiple hosts.

Decorations: Now comes the fun part! Decorating for a baby shower allows you to be as creative as you want to be. Whether you are showering the mother-to-be out at a restaurant or hall or at a family or friend's house, make sure that you work with the Noah's Ark theme. Start by hanging Noah's Ark Dangling Swirls from the light fixtures or ceiling if you can reach it. If there is empty space on the walls at the party venue, purchase some Noah's Ark Stick On Wall Decorations to scatter around.

  • 07/29/10--10:00: The Best Party I Ever Threw: Present-Themed Birthday Party (chan 1023606)
  • birthday present

We all know that a toddler's favorite part of the party is the presents -- so why not make that the theme for his party? Here's how one clever mom did just that.

For my son's first birthday, my husband and I toyed with party theme ideas for weeks before settling on a gift box theme. As a 1-year-old, my son was only beginning to show affection for certain toys or shows, and there was no clear winner. Instead, we decided to model everything after a giant present -- something we were sure any child would love.

My first task was the cake. I wanted it to be a statement defining the theme of the party. I decided to design the cake, but I hired someone to bake and decorate it because I had no personal expertise in that arena.

The cake was built as two large boxes piled on top of each other, with the top one slightly smaller and rotated at a 45-degree angle relative to the bottom one, so that it looked like a small stack of presents. The bottom cake was red velvet and the top cake was white (to appease picky eaters). The entire thing was covered with orange and yellow butter cream frosting.

  • laptop computer

The new Etipedia on Emilypost.com answers all your etiquette questions. Credit: The Emily Post Institute

It's wedding season! Time to brush up on your etiquette -- and luckily, Emily Post offers a new way to tackle all your tough questions about manners.

Since 1922, polite party-goers have been relying on "Emily Post's Etiquette" to answer their most pressing questions about how to behave. But now the Emily Post Institute has introduced a new way to search its annals of manners, beyond the big blue book. The institute revamped its website and developed the "Etipedia," a search function that acts as an incredibly thorough encyclopedia of etiquette.

Daniel Post Senning, the institute's Webmaster, spokesperson and great-great-grandson of Emily Post herself, focused on improving the readers' experience when looking for etiquette guidance. The Etipedia brings together advice from all Emily Post sources, from the revered blue tome to podcasts, so that readers will have the fullest possible results from any given search. This database became the cornerstone of the website's new design.

"For us, it was a leap of faith," Senning told Holidash. "[We've] been in print for almost 90 years... to make this move into the digital realm represents a real generational shift as a company. Already, the response has been incredible."

One aspect of the Etipedia recalls the traditional etiquette book: Its categorization tabs. These categories, such as Everyday Manners and Getting the Job, correspond to the terms used in the main "Emily Post's Etiquette" guide.

You can also search the Etipedia using keywords or phrases, just as you would with Google.

Your engaged friends are looking forward to making a home together -- so why not give them a head start with a bed and bath shower? Help them stock the bath and decorate the guest room -- or their room -- with everything they need to sleep (ahem) in peace.

Invitations: Send guests invitations for the bed and bath bridal shower so they know the theme. For a very girly bride-to-be, check out these Pink Bubbles Bed and Bath Bridal Shower Invitations. If she is more of a traditional bride, you may want to pick these Bed & Bath Wedding Shower Invitations. If the bride-to-be is a very modern lady, send out these Bed & Bath Bridal Shower Invitations. Make sure to include who is throwing the party, the place, date, time, how to RSVP, and where the bride is registered.

Decorations: Set the bed and bath theme by creating a relaxing environment. Place these Robin's Egg Bridal Shower Soap Centerpiece on each of the tables. You can also put a few Yankee Candle Lavender Vanilla Small Jar on each of the tables for a pretty scent. Finish off the table decorations by sprinkling Nirvana Mix White, Cream, Blush, and Red Rose Petals around the table.

  • 08/11/10--10:00: How to Decorate for a Backyard Summer Party (chan 1023606)

  • Decorating for a summer backyard party can be simple, inexpensive, and fabulous all at the same time with just a little preparation and a few personal touches in your yard and on your table.

    summer table setting

    Credit: Allison Czarnecki

I decorated for my summer back yard party with several inexpensive elements that still had a bit of pizzazz, even if they didn't break the bank. Depending on who you're inviting to the barbeque, you can add personal touches to your decor that will appeal to your guests and double as party favors when it's time to send guests on their way home.

Water balloons: This is a great kids activity. Since we always host informal family barbeques at our house, water balloons are a simple way to decorate -- all those fun colors in a glass bowl! -- and to keep hot kids happy at the same time. As long as parents don't mind kids getting soaked while they cool off from the heat of the summer sun, water balloons are a safe and easy bet for happy kids.

Fresh Flowers: Beautiful summer flowers are one of the easiest and least expensive ways to decorate for a party. If you don't have access to fresh flowers in your yard, like the ones I used for my backyard party, purchase inexpensive mixed summer bouquets at the grocery store. Even if some of the flowers don't match the color palette of your party, it's okay; pull out what you don't want and mix and match flowers until you come up with arrangements you're happy with. In a pinch use old canning jars for vases instead of stressing about taking your nice vases outside.

  • Susan Feldman and Ali Pincus of One Kings Lane

Throw one last party this summer with these tips from home decorating expert Susan Feldman.

As the summer winds down and the temperature begins to drop, outdoor entertaining is just heating up for Susan Feldman, one of the founders of the online home sensation One Kings Lane. With her fun and easy ideas for your next summer dinner party or BBQ, you'll want to keep the party going well into September.

    Dish Towel Napkins
Inexpensive dishtowels make perfect BBQ napkins - guests won't be afraid to really get them nice and dirty. Simple and chic styles can be found online for less than $1.00 each! They're so much better than a paper napkin, not only because they're much more stylish, but because after the party, you can wash and reuse them again and again.

    Kraft Paper Tablecloth
For a casual BBQ, use a simple roll of Kraft paper as a tablecloth. It sets the perfect laid-back vibe for your guests, is ideal for a messy feast, and makes for effortless cleanup. But just because your tablecloth isn't formal, that doesn't mean your can't step up the look with gorgeous dinnerware and glassware. Creating that balance between casual and elegant always makes for the most inviting tables.

  • 08/13/10--13:00: Justin Bieber Costume: It's All About the Hair (chan 1023606)
  • Justin Bieber

You'll be like, "Baby baby baby ooh!" in this Justin Bieber costume. Credit: WireImage

We know the pool is still open and Halloween seems like a long way away, but it's never too soon to start planning your costume. Holidash has got you covered, with simple and fun DIY costume ideas. Get ready to transform yourself for Trick or Treat!

Got Bieber fever? The Justin Bieber look for Halloween is all about the hair. The Canadian singer's signature hairstyle is basically the old helmet hairdo of a 1970s mom, only it looks like someone is blowing a fan at the back of his head, with the added detail of a swoop in the front that almost covers the eyes. Once you've got the hair down, a few additional details and accessories are all you'll need.

    The Costume
    • Wig
    • Ski vest
    • Dog tag necklace
    • Voice-changing microphone
    Hair
There are inexpensive Justin Bieber-like wigs to be found at costume retailers, such as the "60s Pop Icon Wig" and the "Bruno". If you want something a bit more over-the-top and DIY, make your own Justin Bieber "wig" by taking a bike or motorcycle helmet (preferably one that's bowl-shaped) and attaching foam craft sheets cut into teardrop shapes all over with a hot glue gun (be sure the tips point frontward to create a cartoony version of his famous hairstyle). Attach the "bangs" so that they cover the eyes and cut eye holes in them, if desired. Don't worry if part of the helmet shows through -- that's part of the gag.

    Clothes
Justin Bieber wears pretty run-of-the mill teen clothing, with a slight hip-hop edge; pair a ski vest with a black t-shirt and saggy-ish jeans, and accessorize with an oversized dog-tag necklace.

    Props
You'll need a microphone, of course. A video game headset with a microphone will work, but to go all out, pick up an inexpensive voice changer -- and make sure it has a high-pitch option, to recreate Bieber's pre-pubescent-sounding voice.
